TL;DR

Findings§1

Where Secureframe leads

  • SOC 2 automation depth. Shipped since 2020; one of the most-refined Type II workflows in the category.
  • Native integration count. ~300 published vs vCISO Lite’s ~90.[1]
  • Federal / defense coverage. Native CMMC 2.0, FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, NIST 800-171, NYDFS Part 500 — backed by Secureframe Federal, Custom Integrations, and April 2026 User Access Reviews.[4]
  • Analyst recognition. Included in Forrester GRC Platforms Landscape Q4 2025 — a Landscape mention, not a Wave rank.[5]
  • Trust Center + Comply AI. First-class Trust Center product; Comply AI (2023) + AI Evidence Validation (GA May 2025).
  • Support quality. 4.7 G2 across 700+ reviews; support consistently described as “substantively helpful, not just ticket-closers.”[6]

Where vCISO Lite leads

On the overlap (compliance automation)

  • Framework breadth. 250+ frameworks / 1,468 controls via SCF cross-mapping vs Secureframe’s 40.[2]
  • Regulated-industry depth. Purpose-built for education (CIPA/COPPA/FERPA), healthcare BA workflows, and PE portcos. Secureframe covers federal, not education.
  • Continuous maturity monitoring. Program maturity scored continuously with trajectory over time — regression surfaces the day it starts, not at the annual audit.

Beyond compliance automation

  • Signed evidence graph. Queryable graph of claim → evidence → attestation → source with per-event Ed25519 signatures, RFC 3161 timestamps, and an independent verifier cron. Secureframe ships an event log; the signed-and-verified graph is vCISO Lite only. See use case · docs.vcisolite.com.
  • Signed evidence for auditors. Secureframe ships an External Auditor guide + Audit Module for workspace read-access; firm.vcisolite.com adds Ed25519-signed artifacts and independent-verifier output the auditor can cite in the opinion.
  • FAIR Monte Carlo CRQ. FAIR-derived Monte Carlo, expected-annual-loss, and loss-exceedance curves native (Ultra tier and above). Secureframe ships ALE/SLE quantitative risk assessment on enterprise but not FAIR Monte Carlo.
  • Third-party incident response. Refraction re-derives conditional $-exposure hourly during a live vendor breach.
  • Vendor concentration analysis. Herfindahl-Hirschman Index across the vendor inventory.
  • M&A cyber diligence. CCOD for buy-side and portco-side via 5-pillar QCD.
  • Operational resilience. DORA / NYDFS §500.16 / NIST CSF RC with BIA, dependency-graph, ORE outcome scoring, and scenario rehearsal.
  • KRI automation. Threshold alerting, calibration, drill-down to underlying evidence.
  • Governed autonomous operations. Trustworthy Autonomy™ — every autonomous action runs through a signed authority grant with attestation.
  • Signed-authority MCP. Both vendors ship an MCP server; Titanium runs every tool call through a signed authority grant, attestation, and evidence-graph trace.
  • Board-ready reporting. Templated quarterly packet with narrative synthesis, CRQ figures, and scenario overlays.
  • vCISO advisory hours. CISO consulting (4h/mo) on Ultra; dedicated vCISO Advisor on Enterprise.
  • Published tier ladder. Full ladder on /pricing starting at $3,228/yr (billed annually). Secureframe publishes a Fundamentals floor; mid + enterprise are quoted.

Secureframe is a compliance-automation product with a growing federal-and-defense specialization. vCISO Lite is a security & cyber-risk platform of which compliance automation is one surface. The overlap is narrower than the shared category naming suggests.

Pick Secureframe when the compliance workload is the whole workload AND the buyer needs deep federal / defense framework coverage (CMMC 2.0, FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, NIST 800-171). The 2025 launches (Secureframe Federal, Custom Integrations) and April 2026 User Access Reviews are aimed squarely at that buyer.

Pick vCISO Lite when the audit is the price of entry and the work is broader — cyber risk quantified in dollars for a board, vendor-incident exposure computed within hours of a disclosed breach, M&A cyber diligence, or education-sector coverage (CIPA, COPPA, FERPA) Secureframe does not ship. Published pricing starts at $3,228 / yr (billed annually).

Secureframe’s vendor risk module logs a live incident and continues sending questionnaires; it doesn’t re-compute the buyer’s exposure. vCISO Lite ships DC-TPIR productized as Refraction, which re-derives conditional dollar exposure hourly while the incident is live. Detail in §4.1.

Scope & evaluation criteria

Boundaries§2

In scope

Buyer profile
Companies at 25–500 employees carrying compliance, vendor risk, cyber-risk, and (frequently) M&A cyber-diligence workloads without a full-time in-house CISO or GRC lead.
Evaluation frame
Ten capability categories the buyer is evaluating BOTH tools for. Not: everything each product does.
Comparison basis
Published product documentation, live product surfaces, public pricing where disclosed, vendor-published customer disclosures, industry-press coverage (Help Net Security, TechCrunch), and Forrester GRC Platforms Landscape (Q4 2025). Not: vendor-sponsored bakeoffs or internal-only NDA material.

Out of scope

Enterprise-only capabilities
Secureframe’s enterprise SKUs surface capabilities not published on the SMB pricing page. If your evaluation is for a >1,000-employee footprint, this page is under-representing Secureframe.
SI/consulting overlays
Both vendors have partner ecosystems that add capability at additional cost. This page evaluates in-product capability only.
Roadmap
Only shipped, generally-available capability is compared. Beta and private-preview capabilities are footnoted where public.

Capability coverage

Twelve capabilities§3

Amber = Secureframe ships it. Teal = vCISO Lite ships it. Split = both ship it (weighted when one is materially stronger). Hover a hex for the mechanism detail.

Capability deep-dives

How each side implements it§4

Five capabilities, one spec-card per side. Same slots on both cards so the reader can eye-compare row by row. Framework decomposition lives in §5.

§4.1

Vendor risk & third-party incident response

Both platforms ship static vendor assessments. The difference shows up the day a critical vendor discloses a breach.

Secureframe

Static questionnaire + continuous scanning of vendor domains.

Inputs
SIG / CAIQ / custom questionnaires · TLS + header + breach signals from external scanning.
Outputs
Weighted risk score · risk-tier assignment · continuous monitoring alerts.
Evidence
Assessment records · tiered vendor inventory.
Fails when
A critical vendor discloses a breach — questionnaires keep sending, no in-platform $-exposure re-derivation.
vCISO Lite

Same static primitives, plus DC-TPIR conditional-exposure engine for live incidents.

Inputs
Same questionnaire + scanning primitives · plus a formal dependency graph mapping vendors to business functions.
Outputs
Conditional $-exposure re-derived hourly during an incident · cheapest-mitigation naming.
Evidence
Signed exposure trace in the evidence graph · DC-TPIR methodology published on /briefs-and-specs.
Fails when
Vendor hasn't disclosed the incident — the engine has nothing to re-derive against.
§4.2

Cyber risk quantification (CRQ)

Secureframe
Ships ALE/SLE quantitative risk assessment on the enterprise tier (per secureframe.com/blog, using Annualized Loss Expectancy); no native FAIR Monte Carlo. Buyers needing full FAIR CRQ overlay SAFE Security or ThreatConnect alongside Secureframe.
vCISO Lite

FAIR + NIST 800-30 Monte Carlo native to the platform.

Inputs
Loss Event Frequency ranges · Loss Magnitude ranges · calibration from FAIR standard sources + customer-scope inputs.
Outputs
Expected Annual Cost + P90 loss · loss-exceedance curve · priced scenarios usable for cyber-insurance conversations.
Evidence
Signed scenario runs in the evidence graph · quarterly board packet with narrative synthesis + CRQ figures.
Fails when
Buyer needs an enterprise-scale peer-benchmarking dataset — we don't ship one.
§4.3

M&A cyber diligence

Secureframe
Not shipped. No sell-side, buy-side, or portco M&A cyber-diligence in-product; PE / IB buyers overlay a Kroll / Deloitte / boutique diligence firm.
vCISO Lite

Cyber Cost of Deal (CCOD) + 5-pillar Quantitative Cyber Diligence (QCD).

Inputs
Target's attack surface · vendor concentration · data sensitivity · insurability · remediation-cost baseline.
Outputs
CCOD as a dollar figure decomposed into Risk Cost + Remediation Cost · portco quarterly delta.
Evidence
Buy-side pre-signing packet (5-day surface) · portco quarterly board packet · sponsor-level portfolio view for cross-holding concentration risk.
Fails when
Target hasn't cooperated on data-room access — pillars fall back to signal-only estimation.
§4.4

Advisory & vCISO time

Secureframe
Not included. No formal first-party marketplace for vCISO consulting; buyers self-source their advisor from a third party, contract separately, and reconcile artifacts across two vendor relationships.
vCISO Lite

CISO consulting bundled on Ultra (4h/mo); dedicated vCISO Advisor on Enterprise. Lower tiers: platform only.

Inputs
Practitioner assigned at Ultra+ signup · direct platform access for the vCISO.
Outputs
Attested policies · scenario runs against the buyer's own posture · quarterly board packet drafts.
Evidence
Advisor's actions traced in the evidence graph · attested artifacts referenced by name.
Fails when
Buyer needs more hours than the Ultra/Enterprise bundle covers — supplemental hours quoted.
§4.5

Pricing model & sales motion

Secureframe

Published Fundamentals tier; mid + enterprise quoted. Sales-cycle-priced, employee-count-scaled.

Inputs
Buyer's organization headcount · framework add-on selection · procurement cycle.
Outputs
Fundamentals tier published (Vendr floor ~$7,733/yr); mid + enterprise custom quote after 2–3 week sales cycle · Vendr median $20,000/yr (range $7,733–$32,575).
Evidence
Signed MSA + procurement paper · quote line items per framework.
Fails when
CFO wants to size the mid or enterprise tier without a sales cycle — those tiers remain quote-gated.
vCISO Lite

Published tiers, direct-sold to end-buyers.

Inputs
Buyer's tier selection and framework scope.
Outputs
Signed order form referencing the /pricing published rate · monthly or annual billing.
Evidence
Public /pricing page + terms-of-service; Starter tier $3,228/yr (billed annually) covers compliance assessments for up to 3 frameworks; higher tiers scale coverage.
Fails when
Buyer needs custom procurement language beyond standard MSA — enterprise quote available on request.

Framework & control coverage
