TL;DR

Findings§1

Where Drata leads

  • SOC 2 automation depth. Shipping SOC 2 tooling since 2020; one of the most-refined Type II workflows in the category.
  • Native integration count. ~200 published integrations vs vCISO Lite’s ~90.[1]
  • Trust Center product. First-class customer-facing security-page builder (SafeBase-powered); vCISO Lite doesn’t ship one at time of comparison.
  • Customer-success engagement. Most-cited positive-review differentiator: Drata reps proactively flag control gaps before audit.[4] Drata 4.7 on G2 vs Vanta 4.6; vCISO Lite hasn’t been publicly reviewed at comparable scale.
  • Continuous-monitoring dashboard. G2 reviewers praise real-time posture visibility and dashboard clarity — “very well laid out, clear what needs to be done.”[5] vCISO Lite ships the capability but hasn’t been reviewed at comparable scale.
  • Sustained G2 Grid Leader. 15+ consecutive quarters through Summer 2025 across Cloud Compliance, GRC, Cloud Security, Security Compliance, and Vendor Security & Privacy Assessment.[6]

Where vCISO Lite leads

On the overlap (compliance automation)

  • Framework breadth. 250+ frameworks cross-mapped to 1,468 controls via SCF vs Drata’s 30+;[2] adds CIPA, COPPA, FERPA.
  • SCF-aligned control spine. Both platforms support custom frameworks; vCISO Lite additionally cross-maps every framework (including custom) to a shared SCF control spine so coverage composes across frameworks.
  • Regulated-industry depth. Native support for education, government/defense, healthcare BA workflows, and PE portfolio companies; Drata is B2B-SaaS-focused.
  • Continuous maturity monitoring. Program maturity scored continuously with trajectory over time; Drata measures compliance state, not program maturity.
  • What the auditor reviews. Both platforms give auditors their own login: Drata’s Audit Portal lets them review evidence, set samples, and request documents;[7] firm.vcisolite.com does the same, and the evidence they review is signed, so they can check it wasn’t altered without taking vCISO Lite’s word for it.

Beyond compliance automation

  • Evidence graph. Queryable graph of every claim → evidence → attestation → source, per-event Ed25519-signed, RFC 3161-timestamped, with an independent verifier. See use case · docs.vcisolite.com. Drata ships an audit log.
  • FAIR Monte Carlo + loss-exceedance curve. FAIR-derived Monte Carlo, expected-annual-loss, and loss-exceedance curves native to the platform. Drata documents FAIR-style Annualized Loss Expectancy via custom fields and formulas (blog 2025-08-21); no native Monte Carlo or loss-exceedance curve.
  • Third-party incident response. DC-TPIR / Refraction re-derives conditional $-exposure hourly during a live vendor breach. Drata ships questionnaires, no incident-time conditional-exposure math.
  • Vendor concentration analysis. HHI scoring across the vendor inventory surfaces disproportionate single-vendor exposure; Drata shows a list.
  • M&A cyber diligence. Cyber Cost of Deal (CCOD) for buy-side and portco quarterly via 5-pillar QCD. Drata doesn’t operate in M&A.
  • BIA and scenario rehearsal. BIA, dependency-graph mapping, ORE scoring, and scenario rehearsal. Drata ships DORA and NYDFS framework coverage but doesn’t publish BIA scoring or scenario-rehearsal workflows.
  • KRI automation. Key Risk Indicators tracked continuously with threshold alerting and evidence drill-down. Drata doesn’t ship KRIs.
  • Governed autonomous operations. Every autonomous action (LLM, cron, integration writeback) runs through a scoped, signed authority grant with measured-action traces. Drata ships agentic AI (news 2026-03-24) including VRM Agent and AI Agent Governance; vCISO Lite differentiates on the signed authority-grant model. See Trustworthy Autonomy™.
  • MCP tool graph. Titanium exposes 100+ evidence-backed tools via MCP to LLM clients. Drata ships an MCP server (beta); vCISO Lite differentiates on signed authority grants + evidence integrity.
  • Board-ready reporting. Templated quarterly packet with narrative synthesis, CRQ figures, and scenario overlays — see executive reporting.
  • vCISO advisory on Ultra+ tiers. CISO consulting on Ultra (4h/mo) and a dedicated vCISO Advisor on Enterprise; Drata’s Alliance Program directs buyers to channel partners for advisory, contracted separately.
  • Published pricing. Starter $3,228/yr billed annually ($299/mo) on /pricing; Drata is quote-only.

Drata is a compliance-automation product. vCISO Lite is a security & cyber-risk platform of which compliance automation is one surface. This page evaluates the two on the overlap and inventories what vCISO Lite ships beyond it.

Pick Drata when the compliance workload is the whole workload — SOC 2 or ISO 27001 automation, nothing else competing for attention. SOC 2 workflow polish, ~200 native integrations, the continuous- monitoring UI, and a first-class Trust Center are the reasons a buyer would choose Drata for a compliance-only footprint.

Pick vCISO Lite when the audit is the price of entry and the actual work is broader: FAIR Monte Carlo + loss-exceedance curve for a board, vendor-incident exposure computed within hours, M&A cyber diligence, or framework coverage (CIPA, COPPA, FERPA) Drata doesn’t ship. CISO consulting on Ultra (4h/mo) and a dedicated vCISO Advisor on Enterprise; pricing published starting at $3,228 / yr billed annually on /pricing.

Scope & evaluation criteria

Boundaries§2

In scope

Buyer profile
Companies at 25–500 employees carrying compliance, vendor risk, cyber-risk, and (frequently) M&A cyber-diligence workloads without a full-time in-house CISO or GRC lead.
Evaluation frame
Ten capability categories the buyer is evaluating BOTH tools for. Not: everything each product does.
Comparison basis
Published product documentation, live product surfaces, public pricing where disclosed, and vendor-published customer disclosures. Not: analyst reports, vendor-sponsored bakeoffs, or internal-only NDA material.

Out of scope

Enterprise-only capabilities
Drata’s enterprise SKUs surface capabilities not published on the SMB pricing page. If your evaluation is for a >1,000-employee footprint, this page is under-representing Drata.
SI/consulting overlays
Both vendors have partner ecosystems that add capability at additional cost. This page evaluates in-product capability only.
Roadmap
Only shipped, generally-available capability is compared. Beta and private-preview capabilities are footnoted where public.

Capability coverage

Fourteen capabilities§3

Amber = Drata ships it. Teal = vCISO Lite ships it. Split = both ship it (weighted when one is materially stronger). Hover a hex for the mechanism detail.

Capability deep-dives

How each side implements it§4

Five capabilities, one spec-card per side. Same slots on both cards so the reader can eye-compare row by row. Framework decomposition lives in §5.

§4.1

Vendor risk & third-party incident response

Both platforms ship the static-assessment primitives; the difference is what happens the hour a critical vendor discloses a breach.

Drata

Static questionnaire + continuous scanning.

Inputs
SIG / CAIQ / custom questionnaires · external scan signals (TLS, headers, breach signals).
Outputs
Weighted questionnaire score · risk-tier assignment · continuous monitoring feed.
Evidence
Assessment records · vendor inventory · scan history.
Fails when
A critical vendor discloses a breach — no in-platform incident response, no hourly $-exposure re-derivation.
vCISO Lite

Same static-assessment primitives, plus DC-TPIR conditional-exposure engine for live incidents.

Inputs
Same questionnaire + scanning primitives · plus a formal dependency graph mapping vendors to business functions.
Outputs
Conditional $-exposure re-derived hourly during an incident · cheapest-mitigation naming.
Evidence
Signed exposure trace in the evidence graph · DC-TPIR methodology published on /briefs-and-specs.
Fails when
Vendor hasn't disclosed the incident — the engine has nothing to re-derive against.
§4.2

Cyber risk quantification (FAIR Monte Carlo + LEC)

Drata documents FAIR-style ALE via custom fields and formulas; vCISO Lite ships FAIR-derived Monte Carlo + loss-exceedance curve natively.

Drata

FAIR-style Annualized Loss Expectancy via custom fields and formulas (per Drata blog 2025-08-21).

Inputs
Loss event frequency and loss magnitude inputs supplied via custom-field builders · formula computation of ALE.
Outputs
ALE value per risk scenario · no distributional output (no Monte Carlo), no loss-exceedance curve.
Evidence
Risk-register entries · ALE formula results.
Fails when
Buyer wants full FAIR Monte Carlo + loss-exceedance curve for a board or cyber-insurance conversation — overlay a separate tool.
vCISO Lite

FAIR-derived Monte Carlo, native to the platform.

Inputs
Loss Event Frequency ranges · Loss Magnitude ranges · calibration from FAIR standard sources + customer-scope inputs.
Outputs
Expected Annual Cost + P90 loss · loss-exceedance curve · priced scenarios usable for cyber-insurance conversations.
Evidence
Signed scenario runs in the evidence graph · quarterly board packet with narrative synthesis.
Fails when
Buyer wants a proprietary industry-loss dataset for peer calibration — we don't ship one.
§4.3

M&A cyber diligence

Drata
Not shipped. No sell-side, buy-side, or portco-side M&A cyber-diligence capability in-product. PE / IB buyers typically overlay a Kroll / Deloitte / boutique diligence firm.
vCISO Lite

Cyber Cost of Deal (CCOD) + 5-pillar Quantitative Cyber Diligence (QCD).

Inputs
Target's attack surface · vendor concentration · data sensitivity · insurability · remediation-cost baseline.
Outputs
CCOD as a dollar figure decomposed into Risk Cost + Remediation Cost · portco quarterly delta.
Evidence
Buy-side pre-signing packet (5-day surface) · portco quarterly board packet · sponsor-level portfolio view for cross-holding concentration risk.
Fails when
Target hasn't cooperated on data-room access — pillars fall back to signal-only estimation.
§4.4

Advisory & vCISO time

Drata

Partner directory (Drata Alliance Program, launched Feb 2024) — advisory contracted separately from the Drata SKU, through the directory.

Inputs
Buyer selects a channel partner from the Alliance Program directory · partner delivers advisory under its own engagement.
Outputs
Partner-delivered advisory engagement, contracted separately from Drata.
Evidence
Partner-side deliverables reconciled against Drata artifacts by the buyer.
Fails when
Buyer wants a single vendor relationship — the partner engagement is a separate contract with a separate artifact set.
vCISO Lite

CISO consulting on the Ultra tier (4h/mo); Enterprise includes a dedicated vCISO Advisor.

Inputs
Ultra/Enterprise practitioner assigned at account signup · direct platform access for the vCISO.
Outputs
Attested policies · scenario runs against the buyer's own posture · quarterly board packet drafts.
Evidence
Advisor's actions traced in the evidence graph · attested artifacts referenced by name.
Fails when
Buyer on Starter / Growth / Business — CISO consulting is Ultra and Enterprise only.
§4.5

Pricing model & sales motion

Drata

Quote-only, sales-cycle-priced, employee-count-scaled.

Inputs
Buyer's organization headcount · procurement cycle · framework SKU add-ons.
Outputs
Custom quote after ~2–3 week sales cycle (demo → security review → quote) · Vendr median $25K/yr (range $9.4K–$68K across 235 purchases).
Evidence
Signed MSA + procurement paper · per-framework line-item pricing (~$2K–$5K per additional framework).
Fails when
CFO wants to size the deal without a sales cycle — no published price on any tier to work against.
vCISO Lite

Published tiers, direct-sold to end-buyers.

Inputs
Buyer's plan tier (Starter / Growth / Business / Ultra / Enterprise).
Outputs
Signed order form referencing the /pricing published rate · monthly or annual billing · 250+ framework catalog on every plan.
Evidence
Public /pricing page + terms-of-service; Starter $3,228/yr billed annually ($299/mo).
Fails when
Buyer needs custom procurement language beyond standard MSA — enterprise quote available on request.
